Group Captain Sir DOUGLAS ROBERT STEUART BADER
CBE, DSO & Bar, DFC & Bar

HIS MEDAL SET

Note: Original strike medals are NOT Bader's own originals!!!

In December 1931, while attempting some aerobatics he had been told not to try, Bader crashed and, as a consequence, lost both his legs. He miraculously recovered, retook flight training, and then requested reactivation. At the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, Bader returned to the RAF and was accepted as a pilot. He scored his first victories over Dunkirk during the Battle of France in 1940. He then took part in the Battle of Britain and became a friend and supporter of Air Vice-Marshal Trafford Leigh-Mallory and his "Big Wing" experiments. In August 1941, with more than 20 downed aircraft to his credit, Bader was forced to bail out over German-occupied France and was captured loosing one of his legs on the way down! After numerous escape attempts he was eventually sent to Colditz where he spent the remainder of the war. He was an inspiration to all that flew with him and continued to work tirelessly after the war on behalf of limbless veterans.
